Welcome to Stumps Cross Model Flying Club near Duxford - South Cambs - North Essex.

We fly on completely private land.

Model Planes on the Patch

The flying field is on the north Essex border with Cambridgeshire. We are located only a few miles from the famous Duxford Airfield, 5 miles south of Cambridge.

We invite all types of Radio Control Flying at the club, from small electric models, all the way up to giant petrol planes, turbines and helicopters.

New members are always welcome.

We offer a free full training program if needed to help new members pass their club test - which enables them to fly at the site throughout the year.

Our membership runs at approximately 45 members and we currently have a few spaces. To join, please email us using the address at the bottom of the page.

We are now open 360 days per year.

Map of Duxford Flight Control Zone

We only close on Christmas Day and the days where there is an official airshow at Duxford.

Although we are outside the FRZ (Flight Restriction Zone) of Duxford 2.5 nautical miles and also outside the zone as shown on drone safety publications, we take safety very seriously.

SCMFC Flying Field

Our patch was originally seeded in late 1998 and the club really got established in the year 2000.

The club was surveyed by the BMFA and we are a fully affilated club. All members must hold BMFA insurance and also CAA regisatration.

Please note that there is a 400 foot height restriction at the club. Currently there are no exeptions to this rule. You must keep the model aircraft in your direct sight at all times while it is flying, so that you can ensure that it does not collide with anything, especially other aircraft.

Closed Dates 2024: The site will be closed all day due to large Duxford Airshows on the following dates:
Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 June 2024, Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September 2024, Saturday 5 October 2024.

A club with many experienced members.

Our members fly all sorts of Radio Control disciplines, including power fixed wing, helicopter, multi-rotor, camera drones, silent flight, thermal, slope and electric and jet.

We are affilated with the BMFA.

All members will have to be insured with the BMFA and are also required to register with the CAA. Members registering via the BMFA - the CAA will email them their Operator Number once their data is uploaded. The BMFA will communicate Operator Numbers. The Operator Number must be displayed in an easily accessible location on or within the model aircraft.

BMFA insurance is limited to cover of ‘lawful activities’ and therefore the best way to ensure certainty of insurance protection is to comply with the CAA’s registration and competency requirements. It is also important to note that any legal costs and/or punitive financial sanctions incurred by an individual member under criminal law as a result of non-compliance will be outside the scope of cover.
